The song is celebrating a relaxed view of life through a laid-back and authentic way of singing. . The character/narrator singing realizes that what you have is your life and your heartbeat, you’ve got the capacity for love, and you’ve got songs, music. If you just relax, linger and and take it slow, there is something fine happening all the time. Probably more than you realize. The narrator is even too busy experiencing it all that he doesn’t have time to smile!
A bit on the extreme side? Sure. This is also reflected in the music production.
In music production it is quite common to use double tracking: to make several takes of the same instrument or voice and then play them simultanously. Under the right circumstances and using certain tricks this creates a sound that is “larger than life”. This song plays with this technique and takes it to an extreme during the verses. I basically recorded the song two times and sang it very differently during the verses, using widly different timings, placed one take to the left and one to the right. This makes the voices sometimes sing over each other, especially when the title is repeated. (I deleted certain parts to make the result more clear.) During the refrain the voices join together again.
The artistic video paints the many expressive voices of the song as talking heads in a few colorful environments: a worn backstreet wall with falling roses, a live pop art painting, and water reflections of multicolored lamps.
I’ve got songs
and my heartbeat
I’ve got love
and it’s makin’ me happy (now)
and I don’t need for no more things to go my way
’cause all the time there is something so fine
that it never gives me the time to put on my smile
I’ve got songs
and my heartbeat (like a rhythm, man)
I’ve got love
and it’s makin’ me happy
Who Could Ask For More?
I’ve got life
and I linger
all is slow
and so very pleasant now
and I don’t need for no more things to go my way
’cause all the time there is something so fine
that it never gives me the time to put on my smile
I’ve got life
and I linger
all is slow
and so very pleasant
